چکیده

In this paper we study the following problem: we are given a set of imprecise points modeled as parallel line segments, and we wish to place a point on each line segment such that the resulting point set maximizes/minimizes the size of the largest/smallest area k-gon. We first study the problem for the case k = 3. We show that for a given set of parallel line segments of equal length the largest possible area triangle can be found in O(n log n) time, and for line segments of arbitrary length the problem can be solved in O(n) time. Also, we show that the smallest largest-area triangle can be found in O(n log n) time. As for finding smallest-area triangles, we show that finding the largest smallest-area triangle is NP-hard, but that the smallest possible area triangle for a set of arbitrary length parallel line segments can be found in O(n) time. Finally, we discuss to what extent our results can be generalized to larger values of k.

Largest Bounding Box, Smallest Diameter, and Related Problems on Imprecise Points

We model imprecise points as regions in which one point must be located. We study computing the largest and smallest possible values of various basic geometric measures on sets of imprecise points, such as the diameter, width, closest pair, smallest enclosing circle, and smallest enclosing bounding box. We give efficient algorithms for most of these problems, and identify the hardness of others.

Largest Subsets of Triangles in a Triangulation

Given a triangulation of n points, with some triangles marked “good”, this paper discusses the problems of computing the largest-area connected set of good triangles that (i) is convex, (ii) is monotone, (iii) has a bounded total angular change, or (iv) has a bounded negative turning angle. The first, second, and fourth problems are solved in polynomial time, the third problem is NP-hard.

Approximating Largest Convex Hulls for Imprecise Points

Assume that a set of imprecise points is given, where each point is specified by a region in which the point will lie. Such a region can be modelled as a circle, square, line segment, etc. We study the problem of maximising the area of the convex hull of such a set. We prove NP-hardness when the imprecise points are modelled as line segments, and give linear time approximation schemes for a var...

On the Area Discrepancy of Triangulations of Squares and Trapezoids

In 1970 P. Monsky showed that a square cannot be triangulated into an odd number of triangles of equal areas; further, in 1990 E. A. Kasimatis and S. K. Stein proved that the trapezoid T (α) whose vertices have the coordinates (0, 0), (0, 1), (1, 0), and (α, 1) cannot be triangulated into any number of triangles of equal areas if α > 0 is transcendental. In this paper we first establish a new a...

Algorithms for optimal area triangulations of a convex polygon

Given a convex polygon with n vertices in the plane, we are interested in triangulations of its interior, i.e., maximal sets of nonintersecting diagonals that subdivide the interior of the polygon into triangles. The MaxMin area triangulation is the triangulation of the polygon that maximizes the area of the smallest triangle in the triangulation. Similarly, the MinMax area triangulation is the...
